Teen Scientist Creates Skin Cancer Soap, Named TIME's Kid of the Year

15-year-old Heman Bekele has been awarded TIME’s Kid of the Year for developing a groundbreaking soap that can treat the early stages of skin cancer.

Inspired by his childhood in Ethiopia and driven by the high cost of skin cancer treatment, Bekele created SCTS, a compound-based soap infused with cancer-fighting chemicals. The young scientist, who won the 2023 Young Scientist Challenge, aims to make skin cancer treatment accessible and affordable for everyone.
