The Royal Academy of Engineering's Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation (APEI) has narrowed down the competition to four outstanding finalists! These innovators, hailing from Kenya, Côte d'Ivoire, and Uganda, are changing the game with solutions that tackle agricultural challenges, healthcare access, waste management, and sustainable building materials.
The Grand Prize: A whopping £50,000 awaits the winner, with the other three finalists receiving £15,000 each. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the APEI, and to celebrate, the prize money has doubled!
Meet the Innovators:
- Esther Kimani (Kenya): Kimani's solar-powered AI tool identifies crop diseases in seconds, boosting yields by up to 40% and slashing losses for farmers.
- Rory Assandey (Côte d'Ivoire): La Ruche Health bridges the healthcare gap by connecting communities to vital information and services through a user-friendly AI chatbot named "Kiko."
- Martin Tumusiime (Uganda): Yo-Waste tackles the country's waste crisis with a mobile app that connects users with on-demand rubbish collection services, promoting cleaner living environments.
- Kevin Maina (Kenya): Eco Tiles offer a sustainable solution to plastic pollution and expensive roofing. These eco-friendly tiles are made from recycled plastic, making construction cheaper and greener.
The "One to Watch" Award: In addition to the main prizes, an audience vote will decide the "One to Watch" recipient, who will receive an additional £5,000.
